Javier Reyes, Sr. passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010 at his home in Abilene. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 2, 2010 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South. Visitation will be from Noon until service time on Saturday.
Born on December 3, 1930 in Santurce, Puerto Rico to Emilio and Nativida Reyes he moved to New York and at the age of 16 joined the U. S. Air Force. Javier proudly served in WWII, the Korean War, and two tours in Vietnam. After 24 years of service he retired from the USAF and continued to serve his country working on Dyess AFB for over 17 years. He was as a life member of AFSA, NCOA, and the VFW. Javier also served the state of Texas as he retired from the Abilene State School after 15 years of service.
Javier enjoyed volleyball, softball, bowling, golf, and family time and he was an avid Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboy fan.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Ilse Reyes and his children, Richard S. Huerta and wife Cindy of San Antonio, Texas, Javier Reyes, Jr. and wife Yanka of Lake City, Florida, Rosalinda R. Scott and husband Scotty of San Antonio, Texas, Emilio H. Reyes and wife Marina of San Antonio, Texas, Samuel H. Reyes and wife Melissa of San Antonio, Texas and Lu Leonard and husband Kenya of Texarkana, Texas. Javier also leaves 20 loving grandchildren and a plethora of greatgrandchildren.
