Jo was the second child born to this family of four children. Jo attended Nancy Smith Elementary School and was a graduate of the 1971 Albany Lions. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Reverend R.J. Watson at Macedonia Baptist Church in Albany, Texas. After graduation, she moved to Abilene, Texas and worked for the Community Action Program. Jo was also a proud member of the Lady Aristocrats.

Upon moving to Arlington, Texas, Jo started her career that became her passion, in the field of Healthcare. She was employed by Arlington Memorial Hospital. After a sudden brief illness, Jo returned to Abilene with her pride and joy, her daughter, Ashten. She immediately reunited with Mount Zion First Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Richard Carter. Rededicating her life to Christ, Jo was baptized as an adult by Reverend Carter. Devoted to her church, she was President of the Women of Faith group for several years, served on the Usher Board, a member of the Hospitality Committee, a Vacation Bible School teacher, and assisted during VBS in whatever way she could.

Jo was employed by Hendricks Hospital for over 20 years. Due to a series of illnesses during her employment, Jo would be forced to take time away from work when her health began to fail. However, as soon as she would be released to return to work by her Physicians, she did just that, returned to her passion as a Nurse’s Aide, a job she proudly held and also was admired by many colleagues for her dedication and leadership. Jo was nominated for Employee of the Quarter during the first quarter of 2015. After her health declined again, Jo fought hard to return to doing her job. She never gave up or gave in and was determined to get back to work, unfortunately her health would not allow her to do so.

“Jo Cat” was a true and tough fighter. Her nickname describes it all. They say a cat has “nine lives”, and we believe she lived and fought far longer than nine times.

Jo was often referred to at family reunions as the “Favorite Aunt” and “Jo Cat”. She was a second mother to many relatives as well as friends of their friends. Among those that cherished her were nieces and nephews, Rayford Alexander, Paul Weaver (Dee), Dewayne Dunning (Trixie), Misti Tate, Kierra Dean Robinson, Mellani (Mitch) Royals, and Marcus Alexander (Stephanie), Janari Williams.

Preceded in death by her son, Ashford Ray Alexander, mother, Francis Alexander, brother, Rocky Alexander, nieces, Dwan Robinson, Monique Alexander, Qualaysha Norman, Mylliah Royals, and brother in law, Allen Garner.
