In Loving Memory of Dr. Joe L Kethley Jr.
Dr. Joe Kethley, devoted husband, beloved father, and cherished grandfather, passed away on January 9th, 2025, in his home with his wife Stephanie by his side.
Born on March 9, 1947, in Abilene Texas, to Joe Lynn Kethley Sr. and Sue Kidd Kethley, Joe’s life was shaped by his strong roots and a determination to achieve greatness. He grew up in Abilene, attending AISD public schools, where he began building a foundation of perseverance and excellence.
Joe pursued higher education with an athletic scholarship in basketball at McMurry University in Abilene. His academic talents led him to the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed his undergraduate degree. From there, he went on to the Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, earning his Doctor of Dental Science degree. His passion for oral surgery led him to a fellowship and residency at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he honed his skills and began laying the groundwork for a distinguished career.
After completing his training, Joe moved to Waco, Texas, with his family establishing a private practice before joining Baylor Scott & White. There, he rose to the position of Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a testament to his leadership and surgical expertise. Later, Joe returned to the Abilene area, continuing his private practice for many years before retiring.
Joe’s life revolved around his family, who were his heart and his reason for everything. His children were his pride and joy, each of them loving, kind, and accomplished.
Joe was the proud father of four children from his previous marriage to Dr. Caroline Kethley: Jennifer Kethley Appleman and husband Michael Appleman, Dr. Julia Kethley Hawthrone and husband Dr. Andy Hawthrone, Jordan Kethley and wife Michele Kethley, and Jonathan Kethley and wife Brandi Kethley. He was a devoted stepfather to Shelli and Mike Meredith, and Joshua and Ashley Miller. His greatest joy came from being “Grandpa Joe” to his nine biological grandchildren: Samuel and James, Brooklynn and Presley, Jaxon and Juliette, Claire and Joseph, and Jacob. He was also a proud step-grandfather to Carrie, David and Jack.
An adventurer at heart, Joe loved to explore the great outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in hunting across the vast landscapes of the United States, including the rugged beauty of Alaska. Joe also had a deep love for travel, exploring destinations across the United States and Europe. These passions for adventure and discovery brought him countless cherished memories and stories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Lynn Kethley Sr. and Sue Kidd Kethley; his uncle, Dr. Jerald Kethley; his brother-in-law, Gary Walter; and a niece, Christi Walter Zimmerman. He is survived by his sister, Diane Kethley Thomas, and her husband, Mark Thomas; his brother, Jay Kethley; and his beloved nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished deeply.
There will be a private celebration of Joe’s extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the ALL-KIND Animal Initiative/PARC – The Jane and Phil Guitar Pet Adoption & Resource Center, 610 ES 11th Street, Abilene, TX 79602. The family would also like to thank Victor Hudman M.D. and practice manger Genessa, Hendrick Hospice especially nurse Carol, and wonderful blessing of a next-door neighbor Mike Dickey for always helping especially threw the hard times.
Joe’s life was a shining example of love, resilience, and adventure. He will be remembered for his incredible stories, his boundless generosity, and the warmth he shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
