Joe Harvey Mansell passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009 after a long illness. He was born January 30, 1925 in the Mount Pleasant community to Pearl Pauline and Harvey H. Mansell. He was a 1943 Abilene High School graduate and shortly after joined the United States Army Air Corps, where he was assigned to the 3rd Army Air Corps.
After the war, he graduated from the Winona School of Photography at Winona Lake, Indiana and worked briefly as a photographer for the Valley Times in Harlingen, Texas. He returned to Abilene as an early employee of KRBC-TV, working from the mountain top, before the present studio was built. Joe owned and operated Mansells Camera Store on North Sixth, which he later sold to Keaton Kolor.
He also owned the J. H. Mansell Company which processed sports film for many schools in West Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. He was an avid reader, inventor, amateur radio operator KD5JL, member of model railroad and model airplane clubs, and had coffee daily with the group known as The Grumpy Old Men.
He is survived by his two sisters of Abilene, Sandra Mansell and Imogene Collins; his nephew and wife, Joe and Betty Brown of Winters; a niece and husband, Kimberly and Irl Kincaid of San Antonio; four grand nieces and nephews; numerous cousins and his beloved cats, Gabby, Ponce and Russell.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM in Elmwood Memorial Parks, Garden of Ten Commandments.
