CMSGT John R Bowdon, Ret., 81, passed away Monday, October 26, 2014 in Abilene. His funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South officiated by Reverend Wes Terry. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park.
John was born in Orange, TX on November 5, 1932 to parents, Robert and Gussie Bowdon. He graduated from Kilgore High School and attended Lamar College. While in college he met Geraldine Butler and they were married in 1953 in Beaumont, TX. He joined the United States Air Force in 1952, where he faithfully served his country for 23 years. His service included being stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War and Morroco. He retired in Abilene with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. After his retirement he returned to work at Dyess Air Force Base in Civil Service to continue serving our country.
He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church, was a Hendrick Medical Center Volunteer, and was very supportive of the Wounded Warrior Project and the Special Olympics. He enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers but most of all he loved being with his family.
John is survived by his wife Geraldine two children, Elizabeth Nix, and Lee Bowdon two grandchildren, Scott Alan Nix and wife Kimberly, Matthew Alexander Nix and finance Serena Hegedus three great grandchildren, Seraphina Nix, Makenzie Hegedus, Alexis Hegedus.
Memorial donations are suggested to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St. Abilene, TX 79601 or Love and Care Ministries in Johns honor.
