It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of John Bart Cortez, a resilient and determined man, on January 3, 2024, in Abilene, Texas, at the age of 75. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time to honor his memory.
John was born in San Jose, California, to Bart and Rose Cortez. From a young age, he learned the value of hard work, beginning his journey in the fields picking produce. He went on to attend and graduate from Lincoln High School in 1966, where he left his mark by setting a pole-vault record in Track, showcasing his early determination and athleticism.
Embarking on a successful career in the automotive world, John started as a mechanic and worked his way up to becoming a service advisor and a manager. His passion for cars was unwavering throughout his life, and he later became a respected warranty administrator in the industry.
In 1980, John crossed paths with Bonnie, and their love story blossomed into a beautiful marriage on August 28, 1982. They established their home in Santa Clara, California, before relocating to Texas recently to be closer to their beloved grandchildren.
An avid sports enthusiast, John had a particular fondness for baseball and football, especially the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49'ers. He enjoyed bowling, playing tennis and baseball. Known for his reserved nature, John may have been a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words carried depth and meaning. His circle of friends was small but comprised those who held a special place in his heart.
John was a remarkable family man, actively participating in his children's sporting and school events, and he took immense pride in being a loving and supportive father. His dedication to family extended to his grandchildren, whom he cherished above all else.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Cortez; his children, John M. Cortez, and Catherine Hines and husband Bret; his grandchildren, Olivia, Abigail, and Elijah Hines; his siblings, Gloria and Jim Boland, Yvonne and Manuel Benavidez, and Dianne and Dave Valdez; sisters-in-law, Patricia Delp, Connie Artis and Sandy and Peter Sweeney; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
As we bid farewell to John Bart Cortez, we remember him for his tenacity, love for family, and the meaningful impact he had on those fortunate enough to be part of his life. His legacy will endure through the memories and lessons he leaves behind. May he rest in peace.
