John Hart Newsome, 94, formerly of Abilene, died Wednesday, August 23rd at Fountain View Assisted Living in Dallas, Texas. He was born September 16, 1922, in Pine Mills, Texas (Wood County), the youngest of six children of Hiram and Laura Pearl Weems Newsome. The family moved to west Texas in 1924.
He attended Sweetwater High School and served in WW II in the Texas 36th Division from 1940-1945, and saw combat in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and many other awards.
In 1942, he married Roberta Teston, and they settled in Abilene after WW II. He was a master electrician for forty years, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 559, and a 32nd Mason of Dallas.
Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katherine Carrie Aldredge, he is survived by his wife of seventy-four years, Roberta Newsome; a daughter, Stormy Newsome Aldredge and her husband John Aldredge of Dallas; a granddaughter, Robin Aldredge Kraase and her husband Mike Kraase; a great-grandson, Logan Michael Kraase; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Katherine Kraase, all of Dallas.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 26th, at 1 pm at Elmwood Memorial Park 5750 Hwy 277 South in Abilene. A visitation will follow the service at Elmwood Funeral Home.
