John Oberschmid

September 18, 1921 — December 13, 2013

John Robert Oberschmid, 92, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013 in Abilene.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 17th at Elmwood Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with entombment immediately following in Elmwood Memorial Park.

John was born on September 18, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota the son of John B. Oberschmid and Mary Trinidad Oberschmid. He married Yvonne Ruth Overstreet on May 21, 1949 in Mobile, Alabama. John served our country in the U.S. Air Force for over 30 years and was stationed in many different places around the U.S. as well as Taiwan and Germany. He and his wife remained in Abilene after retiring at Dyess AFB as a Lt. Colonel in 1973.

John was a devoted, loving husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife were married for 60 years. He was known for his kind, compassionate spirit, generous heart and playful humor. An accomplished pilot he truly had a passion for flying. He felt honored to serve our country and had the opportunity to do so around the globe. He was an active man throughout his life, enjoyed sports and all things outdoors. After the military, he began a second career, cattle ranching, another passion which he also did for 30 years.

Survivors include his son, John K. Oberschmid of Abilene, his daughter Nettie Edwards, her husband Wayland Edwards and their son Jon Todd Edwards of San Antonio and Godsons Jay and Eric Monkerud of Seguin, Texas.

His wife Yvonne, preceded him in death.
