Johnnie Brown Hetzel
Johnnie B. Hetzel, 88, beloved wife and mother died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Abilene Regional Hospital.
The graveside service will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday in Elmwood Memorial Park. The memorial service will follow at 11:30 AM, in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating, directed by Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Highway 277 South. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 PM, Monday at Elmwood Funeral Home.
The daughter of John R. Brown, Sr. and Lena Wilemon Brown, Johnnie was born on December 14, 1921 in Hamlin, Texas. She married Philip E. Hetzel on November 13, 1943 in Midland, Texas and in 1946 moved to Abilene. Mrs. Hetzel was a member of First Baptist Church in Abilene. She loved the First Baptist Church Library and for over 20 years worked there as a volunteer.
Mrs. Hetzel was part of the group that founded the mission church that later became Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. She also worked for several years at Thortons Department Store in ladies accessories department.
Her parents, a brother, John R. Brown, Jr. and his wife, Billie Cox Brown, and her husband, Philip, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Taras Suzette Hetzel Craig of Austin and many nieces and cousins to whom she was a second mother.
Memorials may be made to the Library at First Baptist Church Abilene or the Cancer Services Network.
