Johnnie Velma Lemons Welch, 77, passed away February 29, 2012 in Abilene. Visitation is Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 6 pm8pm at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. The funeral will be Friday, March 2, 2012 at 1pm at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.
She was born on June 8, 1933, in Woodville, Oklahoma, to John Roland Lemons and Dixie Lemons Davenport. In her younger years before marriage and becoming a mother, Johnnie and her family traveled from Oklahoma territory to the big country area, as cotton pickers. Most of the family settled in Abilene at that time. Johnnie worked for C.G. Conn for a time and then for Caldwell Music for many years until she retired. She was an avid fisherman and gardener until her health became poor. She was a member of the Community Baptist Church and attended services there until her health would no longer allow it. In 1999, she began struggling with such illnesses as C.O.P.D., heart disease, and diabetes.
Survivors include a daughter Carol Webb, two sons David Poulton and wife Marilyn Morris, daughter Eva Underwood and husband Wayne McWhirter, eight grandchildren Shanda Arnold and husband Matt, Leska Osbakken and husband Tommy, Loni Underwood, Clayton Underwood, Jason Poulton and wife Chris, Mekisha Whitehead, Nicole Poulton Phillips, fourteen great grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents her husband, Robert L. Welch twin brothers, Earl and Burl Lemons two sisters, Naomi Davenport, Ladell Long nephew, Donald Davenport two nieces, Mary Bowen and Leathy Day.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St, Abilene, TX, 79601.
