Jose Govea Reyes Sr., was eighty years old when he passed away on September 27, 2018 in Abilene. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Monday, October 1, 2018 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.
Jose was born February 2, 1938 in Port Arthur, TX to parents, Andres and Antonia Govea Reyes. The family moved to Mexico to farm when he was just a young child. He returned to the US when he was 10 years old and travelled the country as a migrant worker. In 1960 he married Angelita Ramirez and they enjoyed 56 years together until her passing in 2016. Soon after they were married they moved to Abilene to begin their family. He worked in several different types of construction before beginning his career in the automotive industry. He worked for Odies Truck Service for several years and later retired from Rocket Oldsmobile after working 15 years in the body shop.
He enjoyed his CB Radio and helped start the Tejano CB Radio Group. He was well known around town by his CB handle, "Rio Bravo". He enjoyed photography, playing the keyboard, cooking out and spending time outdoors fishing and hunting.
Survived by his daughter, Carol Zullo and husband Mike; his son, Jose Reyes Jr. and wife Deanna; nine grandchildren, John Michael Jaramillo and wife Misty, Marcus Rey Jaramillo and wife Sarah, Rebekah Nicole Zullo, Michael Patrick Fannin Zullo, Brandi Michelle Zullo, Claudia Salazar and husband Abe, Scott Garcia and wife Shama, Danielle Reyes, and Gabriella Reyes; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Reyes Mercado; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Angelita; three brothers, three sisters, and his parents.
Pallbearers for the service will be John Michael Jaramillo, Marcus Rey Jaramillo, Michael Patrick Zullo, Reynaldo Villanueva, Efren Villanueva Jr., Antonio Villanueva
Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Molina, Andres Gamon, Octaviano Villanueva, O. J. Garcia, Andy Garcia
