L.C. Scales, Jr., 85, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 6, 2015 in Baird, Texas.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, 701 South Pioneer Drive, with Rev. Jeff Reid, Rev. Jack Ridlehoover, and Rev. Stan Allcorn officiating, directed by Elmwood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South.
L.C. was born on December 9, 1929 in Ballinger, Texas to Lewie Carl Scales and Virginia Mae (Washam) Scales. His family relocated from Rowena to Abilene, Texas where he attended Fair Park Elementary, South Junior High, and graduated from Abilene High School. He excelled in carpentry during those years, and even crafted in class many pieces still in use and on display in his home today. L.C. also enjoyed music, and played the viola and violin in the Abilene High School Orchestra. After graduation, he attended Hardin-Simmons University and LaTourneau Technical College. L.C. was a route carrier for the Abilene Reporter News for seven years beginning at age twelve. He served in the Army National Guard from June, 1948 through June, 1955. As a young man, he found work as both a painter and carpenter and worked both crafts throughout his life. He was an ordained deacon and taught junior high school boys' Sunday school. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean (Mankin) Scales, on June 15, 1963 in Abilene.
L.C. lived the rest of his life as an ever-curious, creative, joyous and humble man in the same house he shared with Dorothy all through their life together in Abilene, until two months prior to his passing, where he then became a resident of Baird, Texas at Homestead Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather who greatly loved telling colorful stories, working with his hands outdoors, and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ as a teenager in the church he grew up in, and became a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in 1978. Loved by many for his bright and gentle personality, he holds the sweetest place in our hearts and is already so greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Joe, and his wife, Dorothy.
L.C. is survived by his daughter, Cindy McCoy of Abilene; his grandchildren, Hollie Gragg (28) and husband Jared of Blacksburg, Virginia; Cristi McCoy (21) of Abilene; and Brian McCoy (20) of Blacksburg, Virginia; and his seven-week-old great-grandson, Samson James Gragg of Blacksburg, Virginia. He is also survived by his little sister, Ica Mae Crow of Abilene, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Pallbearers will be Brian McCoy, Mickey Scales, Barry Crow, Heath Crow, Steve Andrews, and Terry Grant.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jared Gragg and Rickey Scales.
Memorials in L.C.'s honor, or even in lieu of flowers, can be made to The Alzheimer's Association or Meals on Wheels.
The family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to Dr. E. Victor Hudman, Generations Home Health, Homestead Nursing and Rehabilitation of Baird, and Gentiva Hospice for their gentle care, understanding, and kindness.
