Lawrence Larry James Thompson
Our Heavenly Father called Larry home on January 11, 2009, after he had fought a courageous battle with cancer for over 14 years. He died at Dallas Baylor Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born at St. Anns Hospital in Abilene, TX on September 16, 1949, son of Dan W. Thompson Jr. and Mary Browning Thompson.
Larry was among the first class attending St. Johns Episcopal School at HRC. and went thru fourth grade. He was also in the first Cub Scout pack at HRC. Larry was confirmed in the church November 27, 1960, and served as an acolyte until he graduated from Abilene High School. He has cherished the cross presented to him by Reverend Ted Dentzer, all these many years.
Larry continued to pursue his education and enrolled at Control Data Institute in Dallas where he was an Honor Graduate on August 17, 1977. While attending school he worked as a night security guard in Parkland Hospital Research Lab. He proved to be an excellent employee for Bell Telephone Company as a trouble shooter and repairman on call 247. After working in Dallas for a year he and his family were transferred to Houston for a year.
Abilene opened its Texas Instrument Plant and he became an employee, when this plant closed he moved to the TI main plant in Dallas, TX and worked in the DLP Dept. where he retired after 25 years of service and winning numerous awards.
Larry learned responsibility and good work ethics very young, when at age 12 he delivered both morning and evening newspapers for the ARN. Later, he worked for Mack Eplens Chicken-On-The-Run on North 10th St. while in AHS. His passion was restoring and building classic cars for many years, plus riding his Harley-Davidson Motorcycle.
Larry is survived by one son, Bryan and wife Brandi; one granddaughter, Madison; his mother, Mary Browning Thompson Ray; one brother, Dan W. Thompson, III, one aunt and godmother, Eulalia Browning; seven first cousins; one niece, Paige Thompson, his pet poodle, Ms. Daisy, and many good friends, neighbors and special friend, Jo Ann Taylor.
Larry is preceded in Death by his paternal grandparents, Ruby and Dan Thompson Sr.; his father, Dan Thompson Jr.; his step-father, Otis Ray; his son, Shane Michael Thompson; his maternal grandmother, Verna Browning Webb; his step-grandfather, James W. Webb and his uncle, Dr. James V. Browning.
Special thanks to his wonderful, faithful caregiver, Albert Hernandez. Dr. Keith Newman, Dr. Kirat Ghosh, Dr. Carl Trusler, Bill McBurney, Woody Gilliland, Theron Durant, Bishop Scott Mayer, Bishop Todd Bell and Jim Defore.
Military Graveside Service will be 3:00 PM, Thursday January 15, 2009 at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Visitation will be 5:30 till 7:30 PM, Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Elmwood Funeral Home.
