L.C. Agnew

L.C. Agnew, 87, of Abilene, passed away Thursday at his home in Abilene. Visitation will be 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. His funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, April 10, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Russell Ueckert officiating. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park.

L.C., son of Lester and Zilla Agnew, was born outside of Cisco, Tx on September 4th, 1929. He picked up a guitar at age 11 and later became a renowned fiddler. L.C. married Dorothy Lott-Carpenter on November 24th, 1965, and in 1967 he opened the Carpenters Hall where he formed the Dixie Playboys. Several years later in 1974, L.C. opened the Ponderosa Ballroom, now known as Guitars 'n Cadillacs, where he and the Dixie Playboys were the house band, as well as hosting guests such as Ray Price, Jerry Reed, and Asleep at the Wheel among many others. Over the years, L.C. played with many artists such as Johnny Horton, George Jones, Governor Jimmie Davis and Slim Whitman. Due to complications, L.C. sold the Ponderosa in 1994 and retired, but continued to play keyboard at select events around town, including opening a dance hall on F.M. 600 which he named Danceland. He continued to play every chance he had, as long as he was able.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Zilla; brothers, Granville and Benny Lee; and step-son Larry.

L.C. is survived by his wife, Dorothy; brother, Ray; sisters, Marie and Sue; his children, Beverly, Susie and Charles; step-children, Dolores, Bill, Judy and Jay; as well as twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-seven great grandchildren.
