Lowell Maxey passed from this life into the next on February 6, 2014 at the age of 77. His funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Oldham Lane Church of Christ, 5049 Oldham Lane in Abilene with interment following in the Hamby Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday at Elmwood Funeral Home.
Lowell was born on December 10, 1936 in Sweetwater, TX as the only son of school teachers. He was raised in Hondo and came of age in Abilene. After his mother died when he was 17, Lowell graduated high school and moved to Alaska eventually joining the U.S. Army where he served for 3 years. Years later, Lowell became bank vicepresident and loan officer. In 1967, Lowell married Ebb Key and together they got into the oil business in1982. Whether in the oil business, the stock market, or the brief years owning a trailer business, Lowell never truly retired from entrepreneurial adventures.
Lowell was well known as a passionate servant of God. A constant caretaker of the sick and in need, Lowell worked tirelessly reaching out to those in need of the love of God with boundless generosity. Lowell loved mission work, traveling to Central and South America, England, Ireland, and most recently Ghana where he is beloved. Thousands can call Lowell their spiritual father.
Lowell was a voracious speed reader and an exuberant taker of naps. While he didnt eat any meat other than well done beef, Lowell was always flexible and went with the flow. His distinct sense of humor, quick smile, and big hug drew people near to him and kept the mood light. Lowell could find someone he knew anywhere and could talk for hours to anyone. He also loved doting on his grandchildren
Survivors include his wife, Elbertine Ebb Maxey sons, Mark Maxey and wife Tammy of Murphy and Jason Maxey and wife Erin of Houston grandchildren, Ethan, Tabitha, Molly, and Elijah and numerous extended family and friends.
His parents, his sister, Judy Harris and his granddaughter, Emma preceded him in death.
Lowell was the aroma of Christ and an example to us all. He will be greatly missed.
