Manuel Biera Jr.

Manuel C. Biera Jr, 53, passed Saturday, December 31, 2016 alongside his family members, after a brave battle with cancer. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Rosary will be at 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel.

Manuel was born August 2, 1963 in Merkel, Texas. He married Kathy Alvarez on March 15, 1999 and the couple resided in Abilene, and had three children. Manuel spent his younger years working oil rigs, and went on to serve the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Correctional Officer for over 23 years. Known by many as "Coach Manuel", his passion was baseball. He was a huge New York Yankee fan. He was loved by many and touched a lot of lives, including family, friends, and "brothers in grey".

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Biera; three children, Anthony Z. Biera, Ashely Martinez and Alexis Martinez; His mother, Mary Acuna Biera; and siblings, Patsy Adams, Ricky Biera, Bobby Biera, Chris Biera, David Biera, Amanda Mayo, Adam Biera, Lisa Biera, and Krystal Balvantine.

He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel C. Biera Sr.; and his grandfather, Jose Zacharias Acuna.

Pallbearers for the service will be Bobby Biera, Oscar Alvarez Jr, Elias Moreno, Allan Albright, Donnie Tutt, Joe Rosas. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Bosher, Scott (Scooter) Castro, and John Biera.

The family sends a special thanks to Dr. Baig, who took care of Manuel till he fought to the end.
