Margaret Ruth Hunt Jones
Abilene
Margaret Ruth Hunt Jones, 92, died peacefully in her sleep, at home, Tuesday,
April 06, 2010.
Born August 04, 1917, in Stamford, Texas, she was the daughter of the late
Dr. James Winford Hunt, the founder and first president of McMurry College, and
Mary Anthony Hunt. Margaret and her family moved to Abilene in 1918, when her
father reassumed the pastorate of St. Paul Methodist Church. She graduated from
Abilene High School in 1935, and married her highschool sweetheart, Rees J.
R. J. Jones, that same year.
Jobs were still hard to find in Depression Era 1935, and Margaret and R. J., both
still teenagers, relocated to Houston, where R. J. was fortunate to find employment.
They resided there through the end of World War II, then relocated back to Abilene,
in 1946, where R. J. started his own business.
Margaret was always a loving and supportive wife, mother and homemaker. She
was a formally trained, gifted pianist, who passed down her passion for music to her
children and grandchildren. At the age of fifty seven, after all her children were grown,
she went back to school to obtain her real estate brokers license, and successfully
practiced that profession for a number of years. Always possessed an impish
wit and a mischievous sense of humor, she loved to laugh, and appreciated a good
joke. She made friends easily.
Margaret and her husband were also twentyyear members of the local West Texas
chapter of the Good Sam Airstream club, and enjoyed traveling with their trailer to
other parts of the U.S. and Canada. They especially loved the cool mountains of
southern Colorado, and spent many summers there. She and R. J. were blessed with
seventyone years of happy, loving marriage, until his death, in 2006.
She was also preceded in death by her three brothers Dr. Anthony Hunt, Julian Hunt, and Dr. David Hunt,
and one sister, Elizabeth Hunt Webb. Margaret also suffered the death of her youngest
son, David W. Jones, in 1997.
She is survived by one son, Richard J. Jones, one daughter, Jan Carol Jones Young,
eight grandchildren, and eight greatgrand children.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of the Big Country and its staff for the loving care and support given during this difficult time.
Margarets wishes were for cremation and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to McMurry University, PO Box 938 McMurry Station, Abilene, TX 79697 or Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford St., Abilene, TX 79605.
