Maria Karhan

June 11, 1926 — February 21, 2011

Maria Merli Karhan passed away February 21, 2011. A celebration of her life will
be he ld a t Holy fami l y Catholic Church, Buffalo
Gab Rd on March 1 at 10:00 a.m. under the direction of
Elmwood Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South.
Ma r i a wa s born Ol d Forge, Pa. on June 11, 1926.
Parents were Elizabeth and Joseph Merli. She graduated
from Old Forge high School, Hahnemann Hospital
of nursing and McMurry University.
She was employed by the VA Hospital in Richmond
Virginia and Brooklyn New York. Following there she
enlisted in the Air Force and served 6 years as a registered
d Nurse. During this tenure she was awarded the
accommodation metal for distinguished service. It was
at Dyess, AFB where she met her beloved husband
and they were wed in the Base Chapel in 1962. They
had a daughter Kimberly born in Torrejon, Spain.
Among civic involvement Maria was a member of the
Philharmonic Guild, Los Aficionados serving in various
capacities. She was past preside tog Slipper Club,
Mother Study Club, Garden Gate Club and 2 M Investment
Club. She was a member Grace Museum, Contempora r y
Ar t s Mu s e um, Ab i l e n e Country Club, Fun Bunch
Luncheon Group and Thursday Evening Dinner Group.
Maria was an avid Ma Jongg player having taught many
women to play the game. She also played bridge. She
loved working crossword puzzles and Sudoko. She
played an occasional game of golf. She had a hole in
one on 4 at Fairway Oaks Country Club. Maria retired
from the Abilene State School. She is survived by her
husband Robert and daughter Kimberly DAngelo, son
in law Gregg DAngelo and her dearest grandson Alex
DAngelo, stepson James Karhan, step daughter in law
Gay Karhan step grandchildren Colby and Casey Karhan
and sister Ann Holgash and nieces and nephews. In lie of flowers, please
make donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
