Marie Burns Layne, 83, fought a long battle with Alzheimers and is now in Gods hands. She died January 5, 2012 in Abilene. A funeral service was held in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 PM on Friday, January 06, 2012. Interment followed the service at Elmwood Memorial Park in the Garden of Hope.
Marie was born July 20, 1918 in Buffalo, NY to Ernest WM. and Mary Butler Barton. Her parents came through Ellis Island on a mail ship on their honeymoon to make America their home. Marie was so proud their names were inscribed on the wall at Ellis Island, NY. Her school years were mainly in Dallas, TX where she graduated from Sunset High School. While working for a wholesale jeweler, she met and married Spec Burns, her first husband. They had two daughters, Janet Linley Ulrich and Joann Adcock. Marie enjoyed playing golf, bridge and working for her church, Heavenly Rest Episcopal in Abilene. Spec died suddenly in 1954. She later married Melvin E. Layne of San Angelo, TX. During their marriage they lived in San Angelo, Odessa, Temple, and Abilene. A few years ago they returned to Abilene to a local retirement center to be close to family.
Marie was a proud grandmother of Jim Marshall, Melissa Nelson and husband Shannon, Meredith Brannon and husband Chris, and the late Jamie Marshall. Her greats are Lauren Marie Marshall, Dalton Marshall, Coulton Nelson and Cooper Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Ernest and Mary Barton, sisters, Gladys Watt and Lillian Moore of Dallas, her only nephew, Tom Barron of Dallas and granddaughter, Jamie Marie Marshall.
