Marie Smith, age 83, died June 19, 2017 under the loving care of Hendrick Hospice Care with her family by her bed side. The family will be at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 22, 2017 for visitation. The Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM on Friday, June 23, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Reid officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Smith was born on April 18, 1934 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, daughter of Melba Lorane Vaughn. She was raised in the Buckner Children's Home in Dallas from 1945 and graduated in 1954. She resided with Oren and Willie Carpenter in Haltom City, Texas and considered them mom and dad. She married the love of her life, Wayland, on July 5, 1957. They resided in Arlington, Texas until 1968, when they moved their family to Abilene, Texas. Marie worked various bookkeeping jobs including Montgomery Wards, DB Drilling, Dr.Pepper Pepsi Cola and Crown Exploration. She retired with Wayland in 1996 and enjoyed traveling and constructing church buildings as a member of Pioneer Drive Church Builders. They enjoyed participating in Prime Timers where they made many lifelong friends. She volunteered at Love and Care Ministries, Lueders, and was a member of the Love Sunday School Class at Pioneer Drive. She also loved going to garage sales every Saturday checking for a bargain.
The greatest joy later in life was spending time with her seven great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kelby, Kyler, and Kamdyn Gaither; Ellie, Wayland, and Liam Hoetger.
Survivors include her daughter, Vicky and husband Charlie Hall of Georgetown; her son, Kenneth Smith and wife Brenda of Abilene; four grandchildren, Caleb Hall and wife, Sara of Cedar Park, Nathan Hall of Austin; Gina Gaither and husband Josiah, and Melissa Hoetger and husband Daniel of Abilene; sister in law, Carol Smith of San Antonio and Lita Smith of Arligton; and numerous nephews and one niece.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayland Smith, mother, Melba Vaughn, and foster parents, Oren and Willie Carpenter.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff and Dr. Lauren Templeton for the love and care provided to her while at Hendricks Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hendrick Care, 1682 Hickory, Abilene, Texas 79601.
