Martha Haire

March 5, 1929 — July 11, 2016

Vera Haire, 87, went to her heavenly home on July 11, 2016. She died in Harris County, Texas, after facing the challenges of Alzheimer's disease for almost a decade. She was born Martha Vera Smith on March 5, 1929, near Clarendon, Texas. She was the oldest child of Lillie L. Christie Smith and Kay Francis "K.F." Smith. She was a 1946 graduate of Spade High School and married Lloyd F. Haire on October 6, 1946, in Littlefield, Texas.

They moved from Spade to a farm near Muleshoe in 1955. Following Lloyd's death in 1982, Vera remained on the family farm until she moved to Abilene, Texas, in 1991.

She was a farm wife, homemaker, room mother, thespian mom, band mom, and grandmother. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Muleshoe for 35 years. She also volunteered with the American Heart Association alongside her husband, completing his term as president of the Bailey County Chapter after his death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd F. Haire; her parents; a sister, Francis Moore; and a nephew, Wesley Lynn Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Dr. Carol D. Haire of the Greater Houston area, Barbara G. "Babs" Haire of Abilene, and Sue Haire Lombardi and her husband, Robert, and their sons, Michael Lloyd Lombardi and Daniel Charles Lombardi, all of Pearland.
Survivors also include her brothers, James W. Smith of Plainview (and sister-in-law Nancy Campbell Smith) and Clarence Pascol "Pac" Smith of Hale Center (and sister-in-law Joyce Eason Smith); her sister, Dorothy Nell Smith Patchin of Amarillo; and her brother-in-law, Wesley J. Moore of Canton, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

A small funeral service for family and close friends will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, July 15, 2016, in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, with burial beside her beloved husband at Elmwood Memorial Park.
