On September 27, 1926 in small town Fisk, TX., Charlie J. and Lillie "Leona" Thompson welcomed their sweet baby girl, Marvella. Rounding out the family of 11, Marvella, along with her 5 brothers and 3 sisters, stayed busy doing small town life with their large family. She attended school in Coleman and while there, met a sweet boy Billie Mac "Red" Craig that kept her attention. Graduating in 1942 at the young age of 16, Marvella certainly knew what she wanted for her future and on July 19, 1943, she married him. Talk about "high school sweet-hearts", these two were best friends; if one was around, the other wasn't far behind. This rang true from the beginning of their marriage to the end. She followed him to Virginia while he served in WWII and worked little jobs here and there to stay busy. After serving his time, they decided to make small town living their future. Moving back to Coleman, they welcomed two beautiful daughters, Carla and Carolyn, and opened "Craig's Drive in Grocery" where Red ran the meat market and Marvella ran the rest. Both worked hard for their money and did well, but made it their mission to support the less fortunate. The reasons behind their generosity were sincere, so all was done without recognition. Marvella's care for others was especially shown in her love for her family. She has been blessed with 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren that will tell you their "Maw" would do anything for them. She was stern and they knew when to listen, but her love radiated to them with her lessons and time together. In her 91 years of living thus far, Marvella has gone from dolling up from head to toe before she ever left the house, to traveling the U.S. and enjoying retirement with her best friend and their crossword puzzles. All in all, the memories along the way and love that was shared are a sweet reminder of what happens when 2 people fall in love.
