Mary Smith Forkner, 84, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 in Abilene. Visitation will be 1:00 PM, Friday, March 9, 2018 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. A graveside funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:30 PM at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mary was born October 2, 1933 in Goree, TX to parents, Willie Leo and Bonnie Miller Smith. She grew up in the Big Country and attended high school in Trent, TX. She married Robert Forkner Sr. and they enjoyed sixty-two years of marriage until his passing in 2014. They spent most of their marriage in Abilene raising their family. She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. She was always a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She always gave stability and character to her family. Her ways were gentle and caring!
She is survived by her five children, Gayle Moon, Robert Jr. and wife Debbie, Loyce Irvin and husband Kenneth, Cloyce Derrick and husband Greg, and Roger Forkner and wife Susie; her grandchildren, Angela McCartney and partner Phyllis Meek, Tim McCartney, Misty Pratka and husband J.T., Levi Scholl, Evan Scholl, Kaci Mielke and husband David, Kerbi Irvin and partner Phillip Cruz, Nathan Derrick and partner Andrea Herchenrader, Leah McBain and husband Scott, Alyssa Derrick, Katie Johnson and husband Robert, Jason Forkner and wife Jamie, Nina Trevino, Tiffany Taylor and husband Mick, Krista Dewbre and husband Jeremiah; her great-grandchildren, Emma Berkebile, Timothy Ryan Berkebile, Madison Meek-McCartney, Madilyn Meek-McCartney, MaryJo Meek-McCartney, Xavier Meek-McCartney, Jacy Pratka, Jalyn Pratka, Trevor Scholl, Mckinlee Scholl, Gracelynn Scholl, Pacer Scholl, Carter Scholl, Parker Mielke, Cameron Mielke, Isabelle McBain, Carter McBain, Sadie McBain, Shaina Johnson, Marcus Johnson, Mason Forkner, JoyLyn Taylor; her sisters, Frances Thurman, Dorothy Falkner, Beatrice Calhoun; her brother, Harold Smith; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
The family would like to give a special "Thank-You" to Dr. Gao, Dr. Heaven, Hendrick Hospice Care, and Covenant Place for all the love and care they showed the family throughout this difficult time.
