Mary Matthews

Mary Wynell Nell Matthews, 97, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 in Abilene. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 2nd in the Memorial Lawn section of Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Nell was born in the Caps Community on April 27, 1916 the daughter of Herbert Fletcher Poe and Myrtle Beatrice Lindsey Poe. She worked in the cafeteria for AISD for 20 years and was a long time member of Faith Baptist Church.

Nell saw and experienced many things during her 97 years. She was a relentless worker and a wonderful, selfless Christian mother who always thought of others needs above her own. Her yard was her pride and joy she loved getting out and digging dirt even in the last days of her life.

Survivors include her children, Tommy Lee Matthews and wife Sharon of Elgin, Texas, Mary Joan Prosser and husband Richard Edward of Abilene, Robert Edwin Matthews and wife Susi of San Diego, California, Barbara Nell Swetz of Aurora, Colorado, and Phillip Ray Matthews of Abilene six grandchildren, Diedra Liepelt, Mary Catherine Rich, Michael Martin Matthews, Michelle Hobbs, Brian Matthews and Marissa Matthews and five great grandchildren.

Her parents, her husband, R.E. Matthews, her son, David Lynn Matthews, 3 sisters and 1 brother preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the donors favorite charity.
