Matt Emerson Matthews, 63, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2021. A visitation will be held 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM on Friday, May 14, 2021 in the Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 15, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 1333 North 3rd, Abilene, Texas.
Matt was born October 16, 1957 in Fort Worth, Texas to Jerry and Peggy Matthews. Soon after Matt was born the family moved to Abilene. Matt played football for Cooper High School and graduated from Cooper in 1976. After high school Matt attended The University of Texas and was a member of the SAE fraternity. Matt graduated from UT of Texas with a bachelor's degree. He started his career at Pride Refining and transitioned to Avfuel Corporation, he was the area manager for Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Matt loved laughing and spending time with his friends and was known to instigate a practical joke or two. He was always putting others before himself, Matt wanted everyone around him to be taken care of first. On June 10, 1995 Matt married the love of his life Natalie Morton. The couple enjoyed vacations to Colorado that included trail riding and camping. Matt also went on a yearly hunting trips in the fall with his friends. Out of all his activities Matt loved working on his ranch with his dad the most. He was a mentor to others and was adored by so many. Matt will be dearly missed.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Matthews; and his nephew, Will Cook.
Matt is survived by his wife, Natalie Matthews; his father, Jerry Matthews; his sister, Debra Cook and her husband Jeff; his nephew, Jefferey Cook; his niece, Cameron Colyer and her husband Wilkie; his aunt, Billy Carol Rhodes and her husband Terry; his uncle, Max Matthews; and numerous cousins.
Memorials may be made in Matts honor to md Anderson leukemia research.
