Meldean Tookie Blanks Steger, 88, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2012, at her home. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012, at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel on Hwy 277, Abilene, TX.
Tookie was born on February 21, 1924, in Abilene, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Walton and Beulah Quattlebaum Blanks, of Caps, TX. Tookie had two siblings, both of whom preceded her in death, Mary Verlyn Blanks Trantham and husband Grady Weldon Trantham of Fort Worth, TX and Lloyd Walton Blanks of NYC.
Tookie grew up in Caps, TX. She spent many happy years growing up on the farm with Bubba and Lloyd and spending hours fishing. She graduated from Abilene High School and attended McMurry College. Tookie spent most of her working years employed with Texas Rehabilitation Commission. She had many fond memories from those years of working for the state and gained many friendships. She spent many hours cooking for her three kids and all their friends, and years later, all the grandkids. She always looked forward to a roadtrip to Fort Worth to spend time with her sister, Bubba, and they were close friends all their lives. Tookie always looked forward to the Dallas Cowboys or the Texas Rangers coming on TV, and would welcome anyone to join her in watching the games.
She was a longtime volunteer at Abilene Regional Medical Center, where she worked at the front desk greeting patients family members and looking up room numbers for them. She was a member at Southside Baptist Church, and enjoyed attending Sunday school and visiting with her church family.
Survivors include her son, Bill Munden son, Mark Munden and wife Lorie daughter, Kris Kimbrell and husband Kit grandsons, Keith, Cary Kevin Munden and their wives grandson, Daniel Munden granddaughter, Lindsey Munden and several greatgrandchildren. Other family members are Paulette Munden, Nancy Munden, and Suzy and Norman McMillan.
The family would like to give special thanks to Home Instead Senior Care for their many years of service, love and dedication. Tookie had many loving caregivers over the years and appreciated each one of them. Also to be commended is Hendrick Hospice Care for their help and care over the past year. We will be forever grateful for the excellent attention we received.
Tookie was a supporter of Rescue the Animals in Abilene for many years of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations to this worthy organization would be welcomed.
