MAJ Melvin “Mel” Hill, USAF, Retired, 59, of San Angelo, TX, beloved husband, cherished brother, father, and son, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019, in San Antonio. A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019, at 1:00 PM at the Oldham Lane Church of Christ, 5049 Oldham Lane, Abilene, TX 79602.
Mel was born on July 11, 1960, in Flint, Michigan to Raye and Betty Moore Hill. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Harding University in Searcy, AR and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas, San Antonio. Mel served his country in the US Air Force and retired in August 2004, after 20 years of meritorious service. During his active duty career, Mel received The Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and the National Defense Service Medal. After retirement, Mel practiced and trained residents in anesthesia at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, where he received recognition as Outstanding Nurse Anesthesia Instructor.
Mel married Christina (Christy) Taylor on July 13, 2002, in Honolulu, HI. In 2015, Mel and Christy relocated to San Angelo, TX where he worked at Shannon Medical Center as a Nurse Anesthetist. Mel’s first passion was his family. He was an avid golfer, devout Michigan Wolverine fan and enjoyed traveling with Christy.
Mel was preceded in death by his mother Betty Hill and his sister, Rita Hill.
Mel is survived by his wife Christy, children Chelsea Taylor and Lance Hill, as well as Chelsea’s husband Ty and Mel’s grandchildren Gracie, Hutch and a grandson to arrive in October; his father, Raye Hill; siblings, twin brother, Marvin Hill, Roy Hill, Vickie Hill Cardot, and her husband Joseph; special friends Zane and Betsy Taylor, Don and Diane Skinner; dearest aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends made throughout his journey.
Mel will be dearly missed by all blessed to have known him.
