Melvin Edward Layne, 98, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 in Abilene. A graveside funeral service will be 12 noon, Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Elmwood Memorial Parks Garden of Hope, 5750 Hwy 277 South.
Melvin was born on August 16, 1917 to Elzie and Ann Layne. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1934 where he was a sprinter on the track team. As he grew up during the Great Depression he learned to be a very hard worker which helped him succeed at many things. He faithfully served our country in the United States Air Force where he retired as Lieutenant Colonel. He also retired from the United States Postal Service as a Postmaster. He married Marie Barton. During their marriage they lived in San Angelo, Odessa, Temple, and Abilene. Several years ago they returned to Abilene to a local retirement center to be close to family.
He is survived by two daughters, Joann Adcock and Janet Ulrich two granddaughters, Melissa Nelson and husband Shannon of Lakeway, TX and Meredith Brannon and husband Chris of Abilene, TX three great grandchildren, Harpper Brannon, Cooper Nelson, Colton Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Layne great granddaughter, Jamie Marshall soninlaw, Gary Adcock, and his parents.
