Norma Mckelvy

November 16, 1925 — August 16, 2015

NORMA DEE PRICE MCKELVY, age 89, was called home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2015.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 18 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South, Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM at the Southwest Park Baptist Church, 2901 So 20th Street, Abilene, Texas, with Pastors Mike Woodard and Kelly Pigott officiating. Entombment will follow at the Elmwood Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Norma was born on November 16, 1925 in Frost TX to the late Newt and Josephine Toten Price. She graduated from Sam Norwood High School and attended McMurry College.

She married Jim Ferguson McKelvy in Childess on July 10, 1949. They moved to Abilene in 1951. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company with 36 years and 11 months of service in Dallas, Childress and Abilene. Norma was a charter member of the first American Business Women's Association, Oro Negra, formed in Abilene in 1952, and a charter member of the fourth chapter, Catclaw, formed in 1981. She was selected Woman of the Year in 1982. She represented the Chapter at the Annual Assembly in New Orleans that year.

Norma had served in the Children's Ministries at Southwest Park Baptist and Spring Brook churches since 1968. She went on mission trips to Amsterdam, Melbourne, Australia and Salvador, Brazil.

Upon retiring, she taught English as a Second Language here in Abilene and at the Harlingen Literacy Center when traveling to the valley in the winter. She also enjoyed family, friends, traveling and being part of the grandchildren's activities.

She is survived by son, Darryl and wife Debbie of Sulphur, LA, daughter, Denise Stairs and husband, Greg of Mansfield, TX, grandchildren, Jody McKelvy, Rachel Stairs and Eric Stairs; sisters Joyce Bettis and Bettye Baumgardner, and numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; parents and brother, Harvie Price and sister, Vickie McCulloch.
