Oma Jean Nana Shaver, aged 87, died peacefully on June 30, 2014 surrounded by her family in Abilene, TX. Jean was born December 23, 1926, in Duncan, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles Love Howell and Mary Lou Brewer.
Jean graduated from Sulphur High School in Sulphur, Oklahoma. In 1944 Jean married the love of her life, Arnold Shaver. Upon his completion of military service in WWII, they moved to Healdton, Oklahoma and worked in the family dry cleaners business. They eventually purchased the cleaners, and it became Arnolds Menswear and Cleaners. This is where Jean developed her expert seamstress skills. Jean balanced the raising of three kids, being an Elders wife, and helping to run the business. In addition, Jean was very active in music club, Sooner Youth Camp, and teaching Bible class.
In 1967, Arnold and Jean moved to Abilene and purchased Varsity Cleaners. Jean continued her expert seamstress work for over 20 years at Jefforys Village Peddler. In 1974, Jean and Arnold became dorm parents at ACU and for over 17 years, numerous students adopted Jean as their Nana.
Jean was a member of University Church of Christ in Abilene, TX.
Jean is survived by her husband Arnold W. Shaver, Sr sons, Arnold Wes Shaver, Jr. and his wife Rose of Houston, TX, Kenny Shaver of Daingerfield, TX, and daughter Kara Cobb and her husband Don of Stamford, TX. Jean is blessed with grandchildren Scott Shaver and his wife Shari of Bedford, TX and Kim Richey of Houston, TX, Kevin Cobb and Mandy Bender of Seattle, WA, Andrea Whitehead and her husband Justin of Garland, TX, Dillon Cobb and his wife Talan of Abilene, TX, Rachel Gibson and her husband Jonathan of Nashville, TX, Seth Shaver and his wife Charity of Abilene, TX, Aaron Shaver and his wife Arielle of Abilene. Jeans blessing continue through her seven great grandchildren Harper, Olivia and Calvin Cobb, Kayla KJ Richey Father Noyes Richey III, Emmett and Elliott Gibson and Jubilee Shaver.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents Charles Love Howell and Mary Lou Brewer Warren, her sister Fern Pursley, her brother Kenneth Howell, her step brother Jimmy Glass and her daughterin law Elaine Shaver.
Visitation will be 5:00 til 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at University Church of Christ, 733 E.N. 16th Street. A graveside funeral service will be 9:30 AM, Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South followed by an 11:00 AM, memorial service at University Church of Christ.
