Oscar Tavarez Sr., 74, of Abilene passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 in Dallas.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 10 AM at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Robert Lee Hispanic Cemetery, Robert Lee, Coke County, Texas. A visitation and prayer service will be held Monday, January 28, from 6 to 8 PM.
Oscar was born on October 27, 1944 in Tierras Nuevas, Chihuahua, Mexico to the late Blas Tavarez Sr. and Estefana Guerrero Tavarez. He married Rosa Ybarra on June 27, 1969 in Pecos, Texas. Oscar retired from the Texas Highway Department after 25 years of service. Oscar was a very proud and hard-working man who took pride in his work. He enjoyed gardening and watching his favorite teams, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and Abilene High Eagles play. Oscar loved to cook and spend time with family and friends. He loved to laugh and make people laugh. He was a kid at heart. He was a member of Shining Star Fellowship church. Oscar touched many lives and was considered by many to be their dad and granddad.
Oscar is survived by his loving wife, Rosa Tavarez; 3 children, Oscar Tavarez Jr., Sylina Valdez and husband Rich, Lee Ray Tavarez and wife Heather Garcia; 2 grandchildren, Jacob Hernandez and Anessa Garcia; 7 siblings, Elizer Orta, Vickie Urias, Consuelo Rodriguez, Berta Carrasco and husband Ramon, Olga Morales, Aurora Tercero and husband Steve, Delores Alanis and husband Ernesto; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Oscar was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Amalia Venegas and Yolanda Banuelos; 1 brother, Blas Tavarez Jr.
