Pat was an elementary school teacher for more than 40 years. She was born November 1, 1926 in Tom Green County, in the Veribest community south of Miles, Texas. She met her future husband, Loy Gordon, on September 1, 1939, the day they both began high school at Miles High School. After graduating in 1943, she completed a year of college at San Angelo Junior College, and at age 18, she obtained her teacher's certificate and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Carlsbad, Texas.
In 1946, after Loy returned from military service, they married on July 31. They both continued their education and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1949. Pat continued teaching in Lubbock and then at Central Elementary School and Crockett Elementary School in Abilene. For most of her career in Abilene, she taught 3rd grade at Crocket Elementary School, where she mentored student teachers and set high standards for her students. She recalled in later years that she loved most of all to teach her students to write in cursive.
Pat loved her family, which included her two sons, Jim and Jeffrey Gordon, and in later years, cherished her grandchildren, Emily, Jonathan, Mark, Sarah, Claire, Brenham and Abigail. In recent years her granddaughter Emily married Kyle Moore and added three great-grandchildren, Meredith, Henry and Mira Moore to Pat's growing family.
Pat was a gifted pianist, who began playing piano for her church as a teen-ager. She could play by ear, and could immediately play any melody without benefit of sheet music. Her other passion was creating scrapbooks that date back to her early girlhood, and she was working on yet another at the time of her passing.
Pat was a long-time member of St. Paul Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women and was a member of the Griswold Sunday School class. She was a member of Abilene Retired Teachers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J. W. and Evy Clark of Miles, Texas, and her grandson, Jonathan Gordon.
Pat is survived by her husband, Loy Gordon of Fort Worth, her sons Jim and his wife Karen of Fort Worth and Jeffrey and his wife Leah of Granbury, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and cousins Billie Phinney, Joy Johnson, Phillip Shamburger, Virginia Halley-Spiers, and David Teegarden.
Memorials may be made in honor of Pat to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford Street, Abilene, Texas 79605 or to a charity of choice.
