Peggy Joyce Matthews, 78, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2013 in Abilene. Her funeral service with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 22nd in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Peggy was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on September 5, 1935 the daughter of J.B. Mayfield and Elaine Wright Mayfield. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1954 where she was voted class favorite and elected Rodeo Queen. Peggy married Jerry Emerson Matthews in 1955. Since coming to Abilene 1967, Peggy has been an active part of the community she served on boards for Hendrick Home for Children, YWCA, and Abilene Philharmonic Association where she was a past president, she was a member of the Junior League, Los Aficionados, 20th Century Study Club, Oil Wives Club, Abilene Womens Club, Investment Club, and served on the PTA boards of Austin Elementary and Madison Middle School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Abilene.
Peggy was an excellent bridge player and a competitive tennis player. She was a good cook and made the best bean soup. She enjoyed entertaining and was a gracious hostess. She loved her family, friends and the outdoors, especially time spent at the ranch in Putnam.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Jerry Emerson Matthews of Abilene her children, Matt Matthews and wife Natalie of Abilene and Debra Matthews and husband Jeff of Ft. Worth her grandchildren, Cameron, Jeffrey, and William Cook her sister, Billie Carol Rhoades and husband Terry of Perrin, Texas and her brother, J.B. Mayfield Jr. of Decatur, Texas.
Her parents and her sister, Beverly Brown of Mineral Wells preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Hendrick Home for Children or Meals on Wheels.
