Ralph Eugene (Gene) Windell, 91 of Abilene passed away on November 21, 2015 after a long illness.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in the Chapel at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Memorial Park with US Air Force Honors. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM, Tuesday prior to the service.
Ralph was born September 22, 1924 near Gainesville, Texas. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II and served in England where he repaired B-17 bombers. Following the war he returned to Fort Worth Texas where he met and married Vivian Kerr. After they married, he reenlisted in the Air Force and served for 26 years, 6 months and 13 days. His final assignment was with the 5th Air Force Inspector General group stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas.
After retirement they moved to Abilene to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Johnny "Lindy" Bull. They traveled extensively in retirement and were involved in Volksmarching (a national walking club), completing Volksmarches in every state of the union as well as several foreign countries. They were active in several local clubs and served the community as volunteers in a variety of capacities. They both were members of the Church of Christ.
Ralph is survived by his son Rodney Windell and wife Colleen, and daughter Patti Bull and husband Johnny, all of Abilene. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren; Robert Windell and wife Christian of Peoria, IL, Karisa Bailey and husband Paul of Regina, SK., John Bull and wife Vanessa of Lillington, NC, and Tabitha Marshall and husband Scott of Austin, TX, and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Vivian; and a grandson, Brian Windell.
