The departure of Drew Davis Huff has been painful for her family, relatives and friends, which she has made over a lifetime of 97 years. She was born to James Edward Davis and Nellie Mae Sloan Davis on May 28, 1912 in Salem, Nebraska.
She will be received in Heaven by her parents, James and Nellie Davis, two brothers, three sisters and her husband of 51 years, Verner E. Huff.
Drew and Verner owned a small plantation in the South and raised Herford cattle. All who were fortunate to have been with her remember her lavish home cooked meals and hospitality, which was given in a gracious and unassuming manner.
In her late years, she made ceramics which were China painted, and also made beautiful quilts. Her quilts were sought after by family not only for their beauty, but in the memory of such a person, whose inner beauty, words cannot describe. Friends and family who were fortunate enough to have a portion of her 200 pounds of candy confections at Christmas felt very fortunate.
All of us will remember her happiness when her home was full of friends and family and her table was prepared with delicious food. Fishing was her second passion and she fished every day after she moved to Abilene in 1984. While she was living with her daughter, Barbara Huff Decker Anderson in 2001, she was stricken with a stroke, which left her partially paralyzed. She lived in her own home with caregivers, then with her daughter, and then moved to Care Inn of Abilene for two years, since her daughter was no longer able to give her the proper care that she required.
Drew is preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara and husband Don Anderson; one granddaughter, Renee and husband Donnie White of Hutto, Texas; one grandson Ronald Huff of Abilene; four great-grandchildren, Shane White, Jon Paul Huff, Ronald Huff II, Casey Huff of Abilene; and eight great great-grandchildren, who will miss her.
A very special appreciation to her care givers, Pat McCullough for several years, and all of her caregivers at Care Inn of Abilene who took such excellent care of her and especially Patrick, her own very special person. We will miss you Mom.
Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, with burial following at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery in Buffalo Gap, Texas. Visitation will be from 6:00 till 8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Elmwood Funeral Home.
