Reuben Fernandez Sr.

June 22, 1931 — February 11, 2018

Reuben Fernandez Sr., 86, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018 in Abilene. Visitation will be 5:00 till 6:00 Pm with a prayer service beginning at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 15, 2018 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.
Reuben was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on June 22, 1931. He attended school in Carlsbad until he joined the United States Air Force when he was sixteen years old. He served our country faithfully for more than twenty-three years. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars before retiring from duty in Abilene during the early 1970's. During his time in the military he met Alice Magallanez Acosta and they were married in El Paso, TX in December 1959. After his retirement from the service he helped open Fairway Oaks Country Club and then continued his career working as the purchasing agent for both Fairway Oaks and Abilene Country Clubs. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and enjoyed attending St Vincent Catholic Church on occasion. Reuben loved God and enjoyed reading his Bible. He also loved people and was always looking for a way to help them whether it was lending them a hand or giving them some money. He enjoyed watching golf and football, dancing, entertaining friends, but most of all spending time with his family.
Reuben was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Alice; two sons, Reuben Fernandez and Juan Acosta; and his grandson, Sgt. Marcus Fernandez.
He is survived by two sons, Rudy Fernandez and his wife Donna, and Robert Fernandez; Daughter-in-laws, Marie Acosta, Aurora Fernandez-Jumper, and Melinda Ericson; grandchildren, Candice Fernandez-Silva, Stephanie Fernandez-Mirelez, Eric Acosta, Lisa Acosta, Mike Fernandez, Michelle Miller, Shasta Nelson, Joseph Fernandez, Branddy Hopkins, Kari Wall, Christopher Fernandez, Angelina Fernandez; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
