Richard M. Schkade, 83, passed away Monday, February 16, 2009 in Abilene. Viewing and visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 19th at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South. His funeral service with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick officiating will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 20th at the Zion Lutheran Church, 2801 Antilley Rd with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Richard was born on September 5, 1925 in The Grove, Texas the son of Alvin Schkade and Louise Sohns Schkade. He grew up in Albany and came to Abilene as a young adult where he was co-owner of Schkade Brothers Operating for fifty plus years. He married LaVern Alice Reue in 1946 and she preceded him in death in 1964 at the young age of 35. Richard met his second wife Margaret Greer Hinkle when he hired her to look after his young children; they have been married for 42 years. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was involved with the VFW and the American Legion through his service in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946.
Richard was an outdoorsman and enjoyed working with his cattle, hunting, fishing and just riding around in the country. When he was indoors, he could often be found watching a western movie. He was a fun loving, generous person and loved to have people over for a good time. He was known as the King of the Grill at all the family gatherings, finding any excuse he could to have everyone over for a cook out.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; daughters, Diane Schkade-Willson and Joyce Dexter; his son, Dennis Schkade; stepsons, Bob Hinkle and Dennis Hinkle; sisters, Violet Schkade, Anna Schkade, Hildegarde Wright and Florine Jeter; brothers, Oscar Schkade, Clarence Schkade, and William Schkade; numerous loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
