Robert Melvin Hassey, 84, passed away Monday, January 16, 2017 at his residence in Wisteria Place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 21, 2017 in Elmwood Memorial Park's Field of Honor, 5750 Hwy 277 South.
Robert was born on October 5th, 1932 in Tye, Texas to Jasper Leon and Ruth Cooper Hassey. He attended and graduated from Abilene High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1951. He devoted his career to the Marines, serving 24 years and retired as a Master Sargent. While he was in the Marines, Robert faithfully served his country with two tours in Vietnam and served Adak Island during the Cold War. He also met and married the love of his life, Sue Sakuda in 1972 in Japan. After their marriage, Robert and Sue settled in California. They were happily married for 22 years before Sue's passing in 1994. Once he completed his service with the Marines, he went to work for the United States Postal Service and later retired after 20 years.
Robert relocated to Abilene after Sue's passing where he was surrounded with love from his friends and family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was very involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was a lifetime member. Robert also loved to work on his cars and rebuild scooters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; two daughters, Lana Denise Reneau, and Sherry Lynn Douds; his parents; one brother; and two sisters.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Kay Weitzel and husband Craig of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Jamie Ayres and husband Keith, Joni Moss and husband Stephen, Jana Morse and husband Corey, Lori Cribbs, Gena Beam, Jeremy Douds, and Nancy Paul; and many great grandchildren; He was also survived by his sister, Mildred Lucille Melton who passed away one day later on January 17th.
The family would like to mention that Robert deeply admired giving to others. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Salvation Army, 1726 Butternut St, Abilene, TX 79602.
