Roy W. Harris Obituary
Roy W. Harris, 66, Abilene, Texas passed away at his home with his family by his side. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 1, from 6-8 PM at the Elmwood Funeral Home located at 5750 Hwy 277 South and the funeral will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 W. Lake Rd, Abilene, Texas at 1 pm.
Roy W. Harris was born October 14, 1952 in Columbus Mississippi to the late Robert L. Harris Sr. And Jimmie Harris. Roy believed in and professed Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the Mount Zion Baptist Church under GV Clark, Austin Texas.
Roy joined the United States Air Force in 1971 and proudly served his country. During his time in the service, he receive a Meritorious Service Medal, and several US Air Force Commendation Medals with two devices, USAF Outstanding Unit Award with five devices, USAF Good Conduct Medal with six devices, National Defense Service Medal with one device, USAF Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, USAF Overseas Looking Tour Ribbon with one device, USAF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four devices, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, and a USAF Training Ribbon. Beside the United States, he was also station in Iceland, Germany and the Netherlands. Roy retired in 1995 as a Master Sargent and served for 24 years. After military he worked for Lowe’s of Abilene for 14 years.
While stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in 1971 Roy met the love of his life Ms. Helen J. Black, they were united in Holy Matrimony on August 18, 1973. To this union three sons were born Royce R. Harris, Royal D. Harris, and Roij W. Harris. He was a devoted husband for 46 years & loving father.
Roy was a passionate man who loved others and had a heart for the next generation. He enjoyed fishing, listening to music and attending concerts. Roy had a passion for cooking and was well-known for his barbecue. Roy operated the FMSR Food Truck, which allowed him to share delicious meals with others. Roy had a beautiful voice and would bring the house down at any Karaoke venue.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jimmie, Father-in-law: Ira E. Black Jr, three brothers: Robert L. Harris, Jr., James Hairston, William Longstreet Jr., Brothers-in-law: Curtis Kirkland, Ira E. Black III, Sister-in-law: Ora Elizabeth Black.
Roy leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Helen J. Harris, Sons: Royce R.(Xoxenia) Harris of New York, Royal D. and Roij W. Harris both of Abilene, Mother-in-law: Elise R. Clark, Stepmother: Ann Harris, Sisters: Sherley Kirkland, Deborah Osborne, Lynda Longstreet (Richard) Hall, Lenora Longstreet (Darryl) Haire, Tonette (Marcus) Liddell, Sisters-in-law: Darlene “Dee” Longstreet, Monica Lynn (Ron) Simon, Brothers: James (Annita) Harris, Dexter (Chandra) Longstreet, Darryl (Karen) Harris, Brothers-in-law: Michael A. (Lufonda) Black, Andre R. Black. Uncle: William Charles (Helen) Harris, Aunts: Cynthia Harris, Eva Harris, and Bessie Hairston, one grandson: Detrevien T. Harris, Goddaughters: Tina (Derrick) Sumral and son, her parents Alonzo & Rose Cowles and Maliyah Fisher and son, Godson: Kamden Smith, Daughter/Niece: Felishia (Paul) Adams and Family, The Austin Brotherhood, fishing buddy Fred, Papa Harris Troop from 7th Supply Dyess Air Force Base, a host of nieces and nephew, cousins and friends.
