Russell F Day, 82, passed away Monday, December 23, 2013. Visitation will be Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 5 till 7 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral will be Friday, December 27, 2013 at 2 PM in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park.
He was born November 9, 1931 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Allan Wyman Day and Harriett Spenser Day. Both his parents and his older brother, Allan Judson Day, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Evyonne Starnes Day of Abilene his children, T.J. Dabney of Richmond, Virginia, Donny Dabney and wife Lisa of Abilene, Kimberly Patterson and husband, Marvin of Buffalo Gap, Dianna Barbee of Abilene eleven grandchildren seven great grandchildren, a brother, Roy Day of Worcester, Massachusetts sister, Beverly Warhurst of Neptune, New Jersey and multiple nieces and nephews.
Russell graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School and was employed by the United States Envelope Company in Worcester prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force. He enlisted on October 31, 1950 and served in the European Theater United Kingdom, Turkey, and Libya. He also served in the Far East Philippines, Korea and two official tours in Viet Nam. His military medals and awards include Viet Nam Service Medals, Air Force Commendation Medals, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Service Award with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the National Defense Service Medal. He received commendations from both the Korean Air Force and the Turkish Air Force as an advisor. Russell often said that he never had a bad day in the Air Force. He was a member of the VFW.
