Mary Sharon Cummings Young was born in Amarillo, Texas on March 11, 1938 to parents Dee and Lillian Cummings, both deceased. She passed away November 4, 2017.
Sharon graduated from Panhandle High School in 1956. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Abilene Christian College in 1959 and a Master's Degree in Education from Abilene Christian University in 1981.
While playing saxophone in the ACC band, she met Jaryl Young. Sharon and Jaryl married June 27, 1958 in Panhandle, Texas. They enjoyed many years teaching school. Their retirement years were spent antique collecting and traveling.
Sharon taught Home Economics at Floydada High School, Ralls High School and Southwestern Christian College. She taught Kindergarten at St. John's School, Abilene Texas. She taught kindergarten at Taylor Elementary School in Abilene, Texas for 27 years, retiring in 1997.
Sharon was a member of the Texas Retired Teacher Association and the Abilene Quilters Guild. She was an avid quilter, a talented seamstress, a craft originator and an antique collector. She was a member of the Woodlawn Church of Christ. Sharon taught Bible classes for preschool students, as well as ladies Bible classes. She enjoyed creating and preparing Bible class materials and teaching aids.
Survivors include her husband, Jaryl, of Abilene, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Sharyl and Jeff Ayers of Abilene, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Gary Wideman of Burnet, Texas, granddaughters Melissa and Katy Ayers of Abilene, Texas and granddaughters Abigail and Caroline Wideman of Burnet, Texas. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Frashier of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Elizabeth Cummings of Dallas, Texas. Additional survivors include several well-loved nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends.
The family extends gratitude to Dr. William Shudde and the staff at Brightpointe at Lytle Lake for their consistent medical care.
Family Visitation will be Monday, November 6, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Elmwood Funeral Home. The memorial service will be Tuesday November 7, 2017, at 10:00 am at the Elmwood Funeral Home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be given to the Christian Service Center of Abilene, Texas or Cherokee Children's Home, Cherokee, Texas.
