Shirley Sue Counts, 87, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024. She was born on August 7, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, to loving parents Rufus and Ruth Hartley.
Shirley spent her formative years in both San Antonio and El Paso, Texas, where she developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of her surroundings, which would later inspire her artistic pursuits. In 1957, she met the love of her life, Richard, with whom she shared a lifetime of cherished memories.
A gifted oil painter, Shirley channeled her creative talents into her passion for art, eventually owning and operating a beloved art gallery in Midland, Texas.
Shirley had a profound love for all animals, a trait that was evident in her care for her beloved quarter horses. Her compassionate nature extended beyond her equine companions to all creatures, great and small.
Above all, Shirley cherished her family. Her home was a sanctuary of love and warmth, where family gatherings were filled with joy and laughter. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and devotion that will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Otis Counts; her parents, Rufus and Ruth Hartley; her sister, Joe Ann Birdsong; and her brother, Jack Hartley.
Shirley is survived by her children, Sherrie Counts, Richard Carlton Counts and wife Mary, and David Hartley Counts; four grandchildren, Michael Richard Counts, Matthew James Counts, Philip David Counts and wife Katie, and Mary Elizabeth Counts; and one great grandchild, Emily Jean Counts.
Shirley is survived by her loving family and a wide circle of friends and admirers. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her remarkable life.
