Sylvia Canales

Sylvia Consuelo Canales, 74, of Abilene passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021, in Abilene.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 US HWY 277 S. Abilene, Texas, 79606.

Sylvia was born on December 10, 1946, in Kingsville, Texas to the late Blas Avelar and Martha Espinoza. She married the love of her life, Gilbert Canales on April 5, 1974, in Driscoll, Texas. Sylvia worked as a homemaker and an Air Force wife for 20 years. She also cared for children and enjoyed traveling. Sylvia was known for being caring but also outspoken. She was Catholic and a breast cancer survivor. Sylvia will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband Gilbert Canales; children, Michelle Utley and husband Roy, Mark Avelar and wife Alice, Angie Snow and husband Kevin, Jack Canales and wife Stacey, John Canales; grandchildren, Ramey Utley, Michael Utley, Stephanie Avelar, Mark Avelar, Dylan Avelar, Ryan Snow, Zach Snow, Hannah Snow, Bradley, Snow, Tyler Canales; great grandchildren; siblings, Isabell Rodriguez, Rosie Herrera, Debra Avelar, Terrie Avelar, Blas Avelar Jr., Charlie Avelar, Javier Avelar, Hilarry Avelar, Lawrence Avelar; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Sylvia was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mathias Elijah Utley and a brother, Martin Avelar.
