Thomas Brown, 74, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at his home in Abilene. Viewing and visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, November 29th at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South. His funeral service with Chaplain Roz Thomas officiating will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with entombment following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Mr. Brown will be interred in the new Texas State Veterans Cemetery when it opens at a later date.
Mr. Brown was born on November 6, 1934 in Bronx, New York the son of William Brown and Violet Mary Dale Brown. He married Anne E. Sam Hart in New York on January 26, 1957. Mr. Brown spent 22 years serving in the United States Air Force retiring in 1977 while stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. After retiring from the military, he stated that he finally knew what he wanted to be when he grew up and set out to obtain his law degree. He graduated from McMurray College, and in 1988 at the age of 54, received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Texas Tech University. He practiced law in Abilene for 18 years.
Thomas was a member of the VFW Post 6873, NCOA, DAV, Texas Bar Association and the Abilene Bar Association. He was an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Anne Sam Brown of Abilene; his children, Anne Sewell and husband James of Universal City, Texas, Theresa Rhodes and husband Joe of Wichita, Kansas, Thomas A. Brown of San Antonio, Eugene Brown of Corpus Christi, and Margaret McMillan of Abilene; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
His parents and one brother, William Brown preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Sears Methodist Hospice, 3233 S. Willis, Abilene, Texas 79605.
