Thomas Mcrae Sr

March 27, 1932 — September 3, 2014

Thomas Ronald McRae, Sr., 82, of Abilene, passed to his heavenly home on September 3rd, 2014.
Tom was born on March 27th, 1932 in Star City, Arkansas, the youngest of 9 children of William Charles and Lillie Mae Young McRae. After graduating from Star City High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in the Korean conflict. Tom married his sweetheart, Jo Ann Clary, on August 11th, 1957 in Star City. After his Naval service, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force in 1976, and then worked for Pride Refinery in Abilene until 1995. During retirement, Tom volunteered for 12 years at the Dyess AFB hospital pharmacy.
Tom enjoyed reading Elmer Kelton and Louis LAmour novels, loved crossword puzzles, and was active in the Methodist Mens group at Elmwood West for many years, where he often ushered during Sunday morning worship. He was known for his recipes for salsa and Texas caviar, and contributed his legendary beans and cornbread each year to the churchs food booth at the annual West Texas Fair Rodeo. Tom was a dedicated fan of Razorback football and basketball.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jo Ann daughter Belinda and husband Rick of Merkel son Ron and wife Erin of Austin a grandson Matthew and wife Sarah a granddaughter Natalie and grandson Cameron, and many nieces and nephews. We will miss his quiet, steady presence in our midst.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, September 13th, 2014 at Elmwood West United Methodist Church in Abilene. Pastor Jeff Hatcher will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elmwood West United Methodist Church general fund.
