On Friday, October 20, 2023, we bid farewell to a simple man, Thomas Simmons, who passed away at the age of 58. A visitation will be 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in the Elmwood Funeral Home's Family Center, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.
Tom, as he was known to those who loved him, leaves behind a legacy of humility, pride, and unwavering dedication to his family and country. Born on September 29, 1965, in Abilene, Texas to his loving parents, Ezell and Helen Simmons, Tom's journey through life was marked by simple virtues and enduring values. He grew up in Abilene and distinguished himself on the basketball court during his high school years, eventually graduating from Abilene High School in the class of 1984.
After high school, Tom embarked on a new adventure, enlisting in the United States Army. He served his country with honor and pride, carrying the American flag to foreign lands, as he was stationed in Germany. His dedication to the armed forces symbolized his unwavering commitment to a cause greater than himself.
Following his service in the Army, Tom settled into a simple, yet fulfilling life. He worked as a cook for many years, using his talents to create delicious meals that brought joy to countless people. His passion for sports, particularly his beloved Washington Redskins, shone through in his conversations, and he was known to engage in spirited discussions about the game with friends and family.
What stood out most about Tom was his remarkable humility. Despite his pride in his service and his passions, he was a man who never sought the spotlight. He lived his life quietly, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, embodying the spirit of community and camaraderie. Tom was a devoted member of Rise Church, where his faith was a guiding force in his life. It was through his faith that he found solace and purpose, and he touched the lives of his fellow congregation members with his quiet yet unwavering dedication.
Above all else, Tom cherished his family. His love for his children knew no bounds, and he made every effort to provide them with a life filled with love and support. He leaves behind a legacy of love, selflessness, and the importance of family bonds.
He is preceded in death by his father, Ezell Simmons, two brothers, Michael Ezell Simmons, and Gregory Bernard Bell; and his grandparents, Lorenzo and Ethell Thomas.
Tom is survived by his mother, Helen Simmons; his children, Allison Simmons, and Zachary Simmons; his grandson, Noa Carter Lane-Simmons; two siblings, Cymanthia Evans and husband Paul, and Victor Simmons; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Thomas Simmons' journey through life was one of simplicity, yet it was rich with meaning. He leaves behind a world forever changed by his humble presence, the values he upheld, and the love he shared.
