Valeta Ann Matthews, 90, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. A graveside service to honor her life will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South.
Valeta was born on February 14, 1935, to Selmon and Ommie Pollard in Breckenridge, Texas. She was one of four sisters affectionately known as "the Netties." After graduating from Breckenridge High School, Valeta met the love of her life, Sam O. Matthews. Together, they shared many beautiful years of marriage. After retirement, Valeta and Sam moved to Abilene, Texas, to be closer to her sisters. During their time in Abilene, they attended First Baptist Church in Clyde, Texas, where they cherished the fellowship and community.
Valeta devoted her life to caring for her family and was a true Proverbs 31 Woman. She loved Jesus with all her heart and embodied a spirit of kindness, gentleness, and devotion to those she loved. As a prayer warrior, Valeta prayed fervently for her family, and her prayers were a constant source of comfort and strength to all who knew her.
Her life was a living example of the words found in Proverbs 31:28-29: "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'"
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam O. Matthews; her parents, Selmon and Ommie Pollard; and her sisters, Wanda Lee Fischer, Flora Mae Carlson, and Dixie Lou Levens.
Valeta is survived by her two daughters, Kim Davis and husband Craig, and Cyndi Bailey and husband Wayne; three grandchildren, Jason Chapman, Brittanie Wade, and Parker Bailey; great grandchildren, Sam Chapman, Avery Chapman, Bailey Chapman, Bankston Bailey, Brooks Bailey, Wylder Wade, and Walker Wade; and her nieces and nephews, Pete, Bill, Mike, Jeri, Ronnie, Mindy, Jeff, Joe, and Jana.
She will be forever wrapped in the arms of her loving Savior.
The family wishes to thank Hendricks Hospice Care for their wonderful care.
