Velma Bateman

Velma Jean Bateman, 85, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Abilene. Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 20th in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Jean was born on January 15, 1928 in Abilene where she has been a lifelong resident. She married Lowell Finis Ted Bateman on December 30, 1951 and worked at the Abilene State School for 32 years. After retirement she enjoyed traveling to see all 52 States and Papua, New Guinea with Ted and dear friends. She had many fond memories of being a member of The Bluebonnets through the USO at Camp Barkley and she enjoyed quilting, crochet, making ceramic dolls, dancing and many kinds of music. She loved being a mother and grandmother and believed in raising her family to behave with proper etiquette, but to always enjoy a good laugh.

Survivors include her children, Lowell James Bateman and wife Nora and Tedra Bateman all of Abilene her grandchildren, Brandon Bateman and Cecilia Bateman one brother, C.L. Tucker and wife Marie of Plano numerous nieces and nephews and her grand dog, Lola.

Her husband of 60 years, her parents, James B. Tucker and Elizabeth Jane Ezelle Tucker her brothers, Byrl and John Tucker, and her sisters, Annie Matthews, Callie White, Edith McGregor, Emma Askins, Eva Leta Colleher and Bernice Tucker preceded her in death.
