Vivian Joyce Proffitt of Abilene, Texas, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Hendrick Hospice Care. She was 87. She was born on June 26, 1930 in Burkett, Texas. Joyce attended Jim Ned High School and graduated in 1947. On June 12, 1951, she married Leslie Thomas and together they had two sons, Leslie (Sonny) and Bill Thomas. Joyce was re-married to Loyal D. Proffitt, Sr. in 1961 and together they had one child, Loyal D. Proffitt, Jr.
Joyce worked as a Bookkeeper at KRBC - TV. She served as a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years. She will be remembered by her beloved family and friends as someone who loved to bowl, spend time in her garden, travel, play cards with the girls and going to the lake.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Joyce is survived by her sisters, Mary Collum, Estelle Nielson and Sue Windham; sons and daughters-in-law, Sonny and Bird Thomas, Bill and Vicki Thomas, and Loyal and Tina Proffitt; grandchildren Summer Stranges, Eric Thomas, Cameron Proffitt-Hill, and Carson Proffitt; and great-grandchildren Jacob Thomas and Colson Stranges. She was predeceased by her parents, Harry James McFerrin and Edith McFerrin; siblings, Patsy Hicks and Leon McFerrin; and husband, Loyal D. Proffitt, Sr.
A visitation organized by Elmwood Funeral Home will be held Friday, July 14, 2017 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM at the Elmwood Memorial Park on Saturday, July 15, 2017.
