Wanda Lee Johnson, born on May 20, 1932, in Amarillo, TX, passed away on February 17, 2024, in Lubbock, TX. She grew up in Lefors, TX, attending school before later marrying the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Johnson, in 1958. Together, they raised their family in Pampa, TX, where Wanda dedicated over thirty years of her life working as a Telephone Operator for Southwestern Bell until her retirement in the mid-1980s.
After retirement, Wanda and Bob relocated to Abilene, TX, where they continued their strong commitment to Texas Church Builders and the Nehemiah and Widows Ministries through Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Wanda had a passion for travel, boasting of having visited all fifty states. She was known for her impeccable style, never leaving the house without the perfect jewelry, makeup, and glasses to match her outfit of the day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Yokley Elberge and Janet Bernice Boulware Turnbo; her husband of 49 years, Robert "Bob" Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Vanessa Johnson; sister, Priscilla Ann Norris; brothers, Glen and Nathan Turnbo.
Wanda is survived by her sons, Dennis Wayne Johnson and wife Leah, and Joe Marshall Johnson; sister, Betty Lou Marak and husband Clarence; brothers, Bobby Joe Turnbo and wife Carol, Jimmy Turnbo, and Harold Turnbo; grandsons, Matt Johnson and wife Elisa, Jeremy Johnson and wife Rachel; granddaughters Angela Wingate and husband David and Courtney Gaines and husband Josh; former daughter-in-law, Sharrise Johnson; great-grandchildren, Stefan Thomas, Morgan Thomas, Zane Johnson, Bentley Johnson, Ailee Johnson, Maddie Johnson, Shelby Gaines, Palin Gaines, Jackson Gaines, Kaleb Gaines, Savanna Gaines and Ethan Gaines; great great-grandchildren, Zayli Ingram and Za'Kari Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews which were also special to her.
A visitation will be held on February 23, 2024, starting at 12:00 pm at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South, followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene at 2:00 pm.
Wanda loved her family and will forever be remembered for her loving nature, impeccable sense of style, and unwavering commitment to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
